Joel Schlessinger, MD, Addresses COVID-19

Dear Valued Patients and Customers,
As a board-certified dermatologist in active practice, COVID-19 has been looming large over the past several months for me. Nothing is more important to me than your health, and that is why I am including my personal recommendations on ways to deal with COVID-19 at the end of this letter as I haven't seen this in the lay press or on TV for the most part and I think it is important to let you all know my take on this.
Making sure you have the products you need is important to us at LovelySkin. Shortages in medical products for my dermatology practice have already occurred and I am sure this is on many of your minds when it comes to your products. For this reason, I wanted to let you know that we will endeavor to keep LovelySkin stocked as well as possible over the coming weeks and months and have already been working on it.
We have stocked up on most of our products, not only to make sure that we have them, but so that the current stock in our possession is 'pre-coronavirus' stock. Additionally, products that are bleach-based cleansers and sprays (Lasercyn and CLn) have been replenished fully, but we reserve the right to limit sales of these and other products if we see upcoming shortages.
Additionally, if we see the potential for shortages of our top sellers due to supply chain issues, we will need to enforce limits as it is just the right thing to do. For now, this has not happened and we don't anticipate any immediate issues, but we want to be prepared and responsible.
LovelySkin.com is the only website selling cosmeceuticals, makeup and tools where the pickers, packers and all aspects of the website are under a doctor-owned and run operation and in one building. This means that your products are picked by doctor-supervised and health-checked pickers and packers. In addition to myself, we employ three physician assistants and 12 nurses and are taking temperatures and monitoring all of our employees three times a shift. For your safety I am making sure no one can work who has been near or exposed to anyone with potential coronavirus.
No other large skin care website can assure you of this as they all have multiple warehouses and 'farm out' their distribution and I can assure you that none of them have a doctor, PAs and nurses to oversee their staff. We do, and we take pride in it. Additionally, our entire operation is located in Omaha, Nebraska in the building right next to my dermatology practice, which allows us full visibility of our employees and the cleanliness of the process from start to finish.
For your safety, we have already instituted special cleaning and operational procedures based on my evaluation of how products are picked, packed and distributed and will continue to do so to make sure YOU, our valued customer, remain safe.
Now for my recommendations:
  • Please don't travel on planes for now unless it is absolutely and totally necessary. It simply isn't worth it. Cruises have never been a good idea, but now they are incredibly dangerous, whatever the cruise people say.
  • Whatever you do, don't leave this country. The last thing you want to be is sick in a foreign country, where you don't have health insurance and medical care may be substandard. Whatever the initial response to this epidemic, I can guarantee you that the medical care in the United States is superior to anywhere else and that the resort you go to won't have a crisis-ready physician. If you need transport back to the United States, you will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on an air jet if they are even available. Please trust me on this one.
  • Wash your hands as if your life depends on it. Because it probably does. Despite the fact that Purell has sold out, good old-fashioned soap and water are infinitely better. And cheaper. And available. Purell and other hand-sanitizers simply don't cover the breadth of germs and take more product to get the job done than most people ever apply. This is the 'dirty little secret' that just about every dermatologist knows. On the other hand, if you are far from a sink with soap and water, hand sanitizer is fine for the moment, but get to soap and water as soon as you can.
  • Don't touch anything you don't have to, especially gas pumps, door handles, pens, computers, iPads, grocery kiosks and anything that many people touch. If you do, don't touch your face or body until you wash with soap and water.
  • Clean your phones, iPads, computer keyboards and mouse because I can assure you, they are full of bacteria. And probably some viruses...
  • Don't shake anyone's hand or hug/kiss anyone you don't have to until this is over. Shaking hands is one of the best ways to transmit germs and viruses and the medical profession has long known that this is terrible. We tolerated it just due to social convention, but it has been the cause of many colds and illnesses over the years and should be abandoned.
  • I strongly urge you to stop playing sports that involve balls that are commonly passed from player to player or contact with others until this is over. In particular, wrestling is a concern due to the close contact, but really, all contact sports are worrisome as they allow for the easy transmission of the virus from one person to another. Sorry, but it's not worth risking anyone's life for a sporting event.
  • Take time to reach out (by telephone, Skype or otherwise) to your older friends and relatives and tell them that you love them. They are the most vulnerable of us and some of them may not make it through this. It's worth telling them how much you care for them and that you are thinking of them as they may need to have that encouragement and hope at this moment.
I wish you and your loved ones’ good health and a safe future as this pandemic unfolds. Please know that we care deeply about you, our extended 'family', and hope to be there to continuously serve you throughout this crisis.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns by writing to me at skindoc@LovelySkin.com.
